all the news

I’m slipping – sorry. Lots to update I guess since its been a month and a half. We had a lovely trip to Ottawa and Belleville the week before last, Ollie had a great time in both places and slept much better than I had anticipated. The flights weren’t so much fun, but we managed to get him to nap during both of them, spread out across both our laps (shouldn’t have had that coffee …). Ollie loved hanging out with Evan and Clara, and Isabelle and Benjamin, it was fun to watch them all together. Thanks to everyone in Belleville and Ottawa for their hospitality.

Ollie has become totally obsessed with cars in the last month, it’s his first real word too (although he pronounces the ‘r’ like he is British, or maybe from Boston). Anything with wheels counts as a car – cars, trucks, wagons, bikes, motorcycles, shopping carts – that’s the defining characteristic. It was great at the airport, we just planted him at a window and he watched all the airport vehicles racing around, shouting ‘car, car’ at the top of his lungs.

He’s got lots of other words too: mama and dada, nana (banana), googie (cookie), gagu (shoe, we think he is trying to mimic ‘dad’s shoe’), oo-oo (dog), ball (sometimes the ’l’s get left off), bug (buh), bird (buh), box (buh), and bébé (already bilingual!).

Still loves daycare, had no trouble going back after a week away. He is graduating in July to the next age group up, the caregivers have kindly arranged for him and his best friend in the current group to move up to the same group (there are 5 groups in the next age range). Also when they take him outside to play, they take him over to play with that group so that he will be used to the kids and caregivers there by the time he moves up. So thoughtful!

In other, non-Ollie news, we made a deposit on an as-of-yet unconstructed townhouse, a few blocks east of where we are now. We weren’t really thinking of buying at all right now, and we weren’t really thinking of buying anything new, and definitely not a townhouse, but we heard of this opportunity, and it seemed like like a good deal, and we felt that we had passed up too many opportunities already. So there you go. It will suit us very well in the short term, it will be nice to have a place of our own and a little extra space, and hopefully it will be a decent investment.
